Rebel Base Run - Session #5

Rebel Base Run - Session #5

While the party was on break, eating and drinking, Majumdan Zalan arrived with one of his clan members following behind him, acting as his second as the uttin chieftain looked over the room. “Anything good in here?”

“Nothing technical, nothing worth salvaging on your end,” Caewen said from the table. She gave the uttin an even look, “Your people moving up the hallways?”

“Right now they have the warehouses to contend with,” Majumdan said, glancing at the collected salvage but saying nothing in response. He turned his attention back to the group, “You planning to check the control room?”

“Not unless you plan to send your people up there,” Daisy said, “We wouldn’t want to get in your way and cause an unnecessary stir between our two groups.”

“I figure you’ll have that well in hand, and I trust you’ll do right by us in the event some solid salvage is discovered,” Majumdan said, “You sure none of this would be of interest to us?”

“Even if it was, we took the trouble to check this room, we’d need to re-negotiate the split before we offered anything on our end,” Daisy said to the quiet agreement of the group.

Majumdan put his hands up, trying to keep the peace while noting, “Well I cannot simply do an even split, I’ve got my people to look after. How about a seventy-five, twenty-five split our way? Maybe a seventy, thirty split in recognition for your help in protecting Ozzir. He’s the youngest of the group and I promised his mother I’d look out for him.”

Daisy looked over to Caine for support, he scratched his jaw and shrugged with either no opinion, or one he was unwilling to share in front of Majumdan. Daisy looked back at Majumdan and said, “We’ll see. For now, let’s just say we’re willing to part with the gear you’ve salvaged in the warehouses while we maintain our interest with the gear found in this room, alright?”

“I’ll consider it, but that seems fair,” Majumdan said, shifting his gaze to the presence behind him, “We’ll sort everything questionable out when it comes to it. Believe me, we’ll take all points of view into consideration, thank-you,” Majumdan turned to his comrade and gave the nod, signaling it was time to go. The two uttins walked out and back to the main warehouse to rejoin their crew.

“Alright,” Daisy said, “I think we’re good to move along and check off the rest of this place.”
---

Q: Does one of the uttins in Majumdan’s crew restore power while raiding the warehouse?
A: 29 ≤ 75 - Yes - one of Majumdan’s men got the auxiliary power generator working. Light panels began flickering across the base.
--

The one bright spot after the party finished lunch was the way the light panels began to flick on. The lights may have been a dim yellow, but they provided enough illumination that the glow rods could be packed away. At that point, given the close quarters, both Caine and Daisy had drawn laser pistols while Caewen was sticking with her sword and shield and Po kept his flamer at the ready. The group worked their way north from the east barracks, turning west where they reached the double doors that led into the control room.
--

Q: Is the access terminal on?
A: 27 ≤ 75 - Yes, the terminal is online.

Q: Is it locked down?
A: 73 > 65% - No, it seems standard access only. The base was abandoned, not put on a war footing.
--

Caine looked over the door controls and was satisfied with his technical expertise that the panel was in working order. He waited until Caewen and Po had solid coverage on the door before he pressed the access command, listening to the whir of servos as they drew the doors apart, grinding at points due to the dirt that dug into the track and had to be ground out by the motion of the doors. Weapons swept over a control room made up of three terminals. Although auxiliary power had returned, most of the terminal screens were either dark or displaying standby static. A major system reboot would be needed to get the complicated systems up and running again.

Daisy and Caewen remained outside with the doors open as Caine and Po swept through and Caine started looking for salvage. He finds the following below:

1 Portable Diagnostic Reader — fully charged.

1 Compact Comms Headset with Field Transceiver — functional, but requires recharge.

1 Service & Maintenance Key Card — coded for depot access/service functions.

1 Spare Data Slate

1 Emergency Power Coupler with Cable Bundle

2 Trade Units of Electronic Components

“Grab me that box over there,” Caine gestures to a nearby metal box that included an artificial plant that some employee must have left behind when evacuating the base. Po set the plastic plant to one side and walked over, sitting the box next to Caine, who began dumping electronic parts within, “A lot of this stuff we could probably keep, but they’re going to want the spare parts, maybe the spare cables and coupler.”

“Are you going to check the cameras?” Po asked, rolling his eyes as Caine’s fingers deftly sifted through the pile of circuit boards, casually dropping the viable ones and leaving the burned out units laying on the floor. Caine stopped counting chips, nodding and wiping his hands on his utilities before approaching the terminal marked security.
--

Caine attempts a full restart on the computer, warning the party this may take time.
Caine technology roll (19) - 9 ≤ 19 - Success. It’s a solid success that he cuts down the work time by a few minutes. Caewen and Daisy found themselves leaning against the wall and sitting on the ground watching while Caine worked before the security terminal became fully active.
--

Q: Is over half the cameras working?
A: 33% ≤ 50% - Yes, one or two screens are off, but the rest are active and recording in key locations within the facility.

Q: Does the last unexplored area of the depot, the utility closet, have an active camera?
A: 18% ≤ 50% - Yes

Q: Does the camera show anything threatening?
A: 64 > 35 - No, the camera’s feed is not the best, but it seems to be a standard industrial closet.
—

“I’ll keep working on this, see what I can get up and running. I’m confident none of us will need to go in guns blazing,” Caine announced as he hopped down from the security console and started towards the central console which provided oversight across the base.

Caewen and Po made their way towards the industrial closet at the end of the hall where Po used the access panel to open the double doors which led into the closet. A rack of safety outfits was missing, but as the group searched they found the following gear:

  • 1 Maintenance Tool Roll

  • 2 Spare Air Filters — still sealed in plastic; packaging is dusty, but the filters themselves are unused.

  • 1 Sealed Container of Industrial Lubricant

  • 1 Replacement Drain Pump — still boxed, with the proper connection hose.

  • 1 Fire-Suppression Canister

  • 2 Trade Units of Miscellaneous Maintenance Parts

Caewen returned with the salvaged gear and placed it on the ground, “I imagine we’re going to at least press our uttin friends to let us keep the pump if anything else.”

—
While Caewen is away, Caine makes a Technology check to see if he can get the central command console online in a similar fashion to the security console. (Technology roll: 12 < 19) - Success. Even if I applied a -2 or -4 complication, Caine rolls low enough that he is patently successful in operating the central console.

Q: Does it activate?
A: 22% ≤ 65% - Yes, the central console comes on and gives a fair amount of access to the bases doors, system check, temperature control, and other commands that the depot manager could reasonably be expected to have access to.

Rebel Base Run - Session #4

Rebel Base Run - Session #4

GM Comments: Last session the party, plus an uttin named Ozzir, took a peek into the main warehouse while the uttin crew chief, Majumdan Zalan and the rest of his men searched the remainder of the southern warehouse. The party was attacked by a malfunctioning mining bot which managed to cause some damage to Caewen before being dismantled. The two teams now converge on the central warehouse.

Q: Does Ozzir continue to follow the party?
A: 86% > 65% - No, he decides this time to remain with his chief and the others while the party starts investigating the inner halls of the depot.
—

“You sure you do not want to look over any other scrap you can bring to Majumdan?” Caine asked Ozzir.

The young uttin shook his head, “I think the robot is prize enough, plus, what good to bring more salvage if Majumdan is just going to scold me for not following orders,” Ozzir said before pointing at the group, “Take care of yourself in these next rooms. I’m sure we’ll sweep up behind you after we are done in here.”

Caine grunted and said, “I think we may need to re-negotiate this spread if we’re cleaning out the rest of the rooms, but that is just me.” He passed by Caewen, who was already standing and working out the kinks despite Po shaking his head and mild disapproval.

“Alright, mother hen, no need to keep looking on and planning my state funeral, you got me patched up, but I’m not dead yet,” Caewen said.

Po shook his head, but said nothing else, grabbing his flamer as he followed after Caine.
---

The party entered the narrow hallways through the left-hand door in the main warehouse, the same door Caine had first pointed out before the mining bot attacked.

Caewen took point with sword and shield drawn. Caine followed close behind, carrying the glow rod in one hand and his laser pistol in the other. Daisy remained in the middle of the group, with Caine ahead of her and Po covering the rear with his flamer.

The party marched for several feet, saying little. The air was staler than it had been in the main warehouse. The hallway lacked the efficient ventilation ports used in both the main and auxiliary warehouses, relying instead on several air-conditioning vents to circulate air. None of them were functioning.

Moving north, the party reached a corner. Caewen stepped to one side so she could get an angle on the right while Caine moved toward the corner and paused. He waved Daisy over so she could hold the glow rod. With his free hand, Caine pulled out a simple mirror and used it to peer around the corner.

It was empty.

Caewen bounded around the corner while Caine stepped out behind her, his laser pistol angled downward so that he was ready without immediately putting Caewen in his line of fire. Their reward was an empty hallway.

The maneuver found nothing, but it made for good practice in coordination.
—

“Alright, maybe we’re getting a little too jumpy about this,” Caine noted as the group gathered in front of the first door they came across on the left.

“Seeing as that robot did draw blood, I think we’re jumpy enough,” Caewen noted dryly as she waited for Caine to finish his investigation of the door.

When powered, the door would open with a simple touch of the terminal to its right. Without power, the door required other means to open it. Caine spotted that the manual release had already been exposed and worked his small hand around the lever. When he got the nod, he jerked the release, causing the door to unlock and open slowly.

Caewen was through first with her shield raised, followed by Daisy and Po. Caine came up last with his laser pistol drawn.

The first thing Po appreciated, given his size, was the set of windows. After scanning the room and making sure it was safe, he set the flamer down and lifted the first window, sighing in open relief as fresh air flowed into the room. He proceeded to open the other two while Caewen and Daisy looked over the two metal tables. Both showed hints of rust that would need to be removed, but otherwise seemed functional as work and dining surfaces.

Caine looked over several cots tucked into the darkened corner of the room, arranged so workers could sleep there at any hour.
—

The party began picking through the room methodically, stacking up any salvage that was recovered on one of the two metal tables.

(Note - I would roll for any trap detection, but there are no traps in the room. Had there been, I would grant either an attribute or d6 roll depending on how I felt. This room is fairly open and any traps would probably be crude, fairly detectable traps. In this case, this is a general search)

The party finds the following salvage that is laid out:

  • 1d3 (1) intact Mining Guild work coveralls or jackets, dusty but usable.

  • A small first-aid kit located in a nearby cabinet with 1 usable medical charge left after years of neglect.

  • 4 personal lockers, mostly empty, but one contains a few minor trade goods or personal effects worth 1d2 (1) Trade Unit total.

  • A battered crew roster or duty slate, listing names, shifts, and work assignments.

  • A couple of reusable canteens or insulated mugs (1d4+1 = 3), mundane but functional.

  • A sealed packet of old emergency rations, still technically edible if you want a little humor.

  • A basic hygiene kit—soap tabs, shaving kit, towels, cleaning cloths—useful if the rebels later occupy the site.

  • One metal-reinforced case, when opened, revealed a fair quality Takhteh board with pawns and cubes. Quite an analog form for entertainment.

“Do you think Majumdan is going to be interested in any of this?” Daisy asked.

“An uttin is interested in any form of salvage,” Caine said and nodded at the Takhteh board, “Might as well take that, though. Most Uttins prefer current salvage, he’d probably just burn that for firewood.”

Caewen lifted the board, jostling it a little before nodding with approval. “A bit of a sentimentalist, Miro?” She asked.

“Might as well get some use out of it ourselves rather than see it burned.,” Caine said.

“I also want the coverall,” Daisy said, indicating the utility garment. She looked around for a separate bag to store it in. Although she wanted it, she did not want the dust contaminating the rest of her pack. Finding nothing suitable, she folded the coverall into the corner and set her pack on top of it. “Just let these scavengers know that’s my stuff if they ask,” She said to Caewen and Po, who nodded at the request and lingered around the corner of the table.

“Now the bathroom,” Daisy said as she turned towards the corner, “Caewen?”

Caewen shook her head, “It would not be the most prudent move trying to swing a sword in that booth,” She turned to Po, “You eager to clear that one?”

“Eager? No,” Po said as he hefted his flamer, “Willing?” He sighed and nodded to Daisy, “Lead the way, if you please. Caine, bring the glow rod.”

Daisy had her laser pistol drawn as she and Po reached the door. When they were in position and he gave the nod, she pulled back hard, using the door the shield herself while Po used the glow rod’s light behind him and jammed his muzzle forward to meet another stale scent accented by the must of standing water. The single compartment included a right side dedicated to a shower head, while a commode with a vanity joined the left. He scanned the room for a moment before withdrawing and letting Caine perform a maintenance check on the room since it appeared to be safe.
—

Does the shower work?
A: 55% < 65% - Yes, it might need some minor maintenance as it drains slow, but on the whole it works.

Does the commode work?
A: 48% < 75% - Yes, it circulates fairly normal

Does the washbasin work?
A: 09% < 75% - Exceptional yes - the washbasin works normally.
—

Caine tried the shower’s both hot and cold settings, noting a proper shift in temperature. The bottom of the shower formed a small standing puddle that finally drained when he shut the shower down and “watched the water swirl for a moment before the pool receded inch by inch down the drain. “The depot techs must have shaved in here while showering.” He noted a spot where a detachable mirror could be placed.

He had better luck with the sink and commode, both of which moved water at a normal rate, “At least the mining guild built one thing to last.”

“The whole place is in fairly decent condition despite being abandoned,” Daisy said, “They must have been pretty confident the local mines would have yielded something valuable to justify the expense.”

“Maybe they just like burning credits,” Caine said as he started searching the bathroom for anything that could count as salvage.

Caine found the following:

  • A wall-mounted hygiene dispenser with 1d3+1 (4) intact soap or cleaning cartridges.

  • 2–3 (2) folded industrial towels or cleaning cloths still sealed in plastic.

  • A basic sanitation/maintenance kit with drain cleaner, sealant, a wrench, or replacement fittings.

  • One intact mirror panel that could replace the current mirror panel. Both installed and empty units were empty.

  • 1d2 ( 2) sealed packets of water-purification tablets for use as emergency sanitation supplies.

—

“Might as well claim most of this as ours as well,” Caine said as he stacked the material, “After all, we did the grunt work in liberating this room.”

“Not a bad idea,” Daisy said, “Alright. “I think we’ve gotten whatever value we’re going to get out of this room. Anyone opposed to exploring the rest of this complex after we eat?” Nobody pushed back on the idea. Using one table to hold their salvage, the group claimed the other and sat down, breaking out their ration kits and canteens in order to eat and drink.

The Rebel Base Run - Session #3

The Rebel Base Run - Session #3

Caine is the first to call out, addressing the first voice in native Uttinese: “I’m coming out.” He steps out from around one of the pale green crates and finds himself looking at five uttins wearing a good deal of salvager’s gear on bandoliers wrapped around their vests or coats. He could see several ion pistols hanging off their belts while the alpha of the group carried a longarm with a compressed air cartridge attached at the bottom, suggesting that the chief was wielding a bolt gun that could blow off a lock, or put a bolt right through an organic body.

The first uttin studied Caine and asked, “Are you alone?”

“I have companions, all of them armed, but there is no need for a fight,” Caine said.

“I’ll be the judge of that,” The lead uttin stepped forward.
—

Q: Does Caine recognize this figure?
A: 38 ≤ 68 - Caine recognizes him as Majumdan Zalan - a minor chief of an uttin scavenger crew.
—

Majumdan Zalan’s eyes stood out sharply beneath the work goggles resting on his brow, bright red against his tan fur. Both of his eyes were clear, sharp, and looking at Caine through a narrowed squint of distrust as his gaze flicked to the crates, “Miro.” He greeted Caine curtly.

“Majumdan,” Caine said, “May my associates step out without anyone panicking?”

“You actually have people with you?” Majumdan said as if surprised Caine would be telling the truth. Not that Caine had ever given Majumdan a bum deal, rather it was due to Caine’s reputation as a city rat, not part of a salvager crew under a chief. Most city dwellers had openly stated their opinions of uttins and it was never positive.

“I’ve got a team with me,” Caine said and called for the others to step around. Eventually Caewen, Po, and Daisy showed themselves, hands were visible with weapons hanging from holsters and sheaths. For a moment the air was tense, but nobody had done anything foolish, going only so far as to gently make sure weapons were not strapped down.

“What are you doing here, Caine?” “The first uttin who detected them, Ozzir, spoke from the side. He caught a look from Majumdan, clamping his mouth after speaking out of turn.

“We had a job to look over this place, evaluate if it can be used as a depot,” Caine said.

“We arrived here first to strip it for salvage,” Majumdan

“I’m sure we can come to an accommodation,” Caine said.
—

I decide to perform a Reaction Check (+2 from Daisy’s Charisma + Acting in good faith on party) the result is: 11 - Friendly

While neither Majumdan or his crew break out into open grins, Majumdan is at least amenable to working with the party to investigate the depot.
—

“Alright, but the salvage split is ninety percent our way. It’s been lean times findings these old Mining Guild depots for salvage,” Majumdan said.

Caine wanted to perhaps haggle the matter, but first they had to get inside and see what the depot still had on hand. He looked to Daisy, who gave a nod and spoke up for the group, “That shouldn’t be a problem, sir.”

Majumdan gave a curt nod and turned back to the southwest door that two of his men were working on the terminal, running a bypass. One of the uttins whose eyes were obscured by his safety goggles, gave the nod that they were ready to go. Majumdan signaled back with a nod and flicked the switch on his datapad. The heavy security door slid open with a rolling tremor accompanied by a metallic whine as rusted surfaces brushed against one another. At least two of the uttins activated shoulder lanterns that lit the immediate vicinity of the room. Not one to be left out of the action, Caewen drew her sword and readied her shield. Po had his flamer out. A soft hiss could be heard from the low flame that burned at the end of the barrel, waiting for a shock of accelerant to expand out into a gout of concentrated fire.
---

Although there was tension, it could never been said that Caewen or Po ran away from a fight if they thought one could be had. They were in the first wave with two of the uttin scavengers who had the shoulder lanterns out. Caewen had her shield and weapon drawn while Po cautiously scanned the room with his flamer. Most of the crates along the eastern side had been overturned, their remaining contents spilled across the floor. Thankfully, the supplies were industrial, aged oil and machine lubricants, none of it was foodstuff or anything else likely to overwhelm the Uttins’ sensitive sense of smell. Behind this initial wave, Daisy and Caine walked in with Majumdan while Ozzir, being something of the runt of the crew, brought up the rear.

—

Wandering Encounter (1-in-6): 4 - No Encounter

Q: Is there any salvage available? A: 41 ≤ 65 - Yes, one of the crates on the far side includes a usable tool kit set, three Toshi brand power converters with active cells, and 1d6+1 (4) Trade Units worth of salvable parts.

While the group conducts a search of the crates, finding the material given there is no threat, Caine finds something.
—

Caine ignored the sounds of creaks and groans as the group broke into what remained of the depot’s salvage. He noticed one of the heavier crates had been torn open, with jagged pieces of metal that was once the side of one of the crates bent and pointed towards Caine, suggesting something had torn its way out. Looking down, he noticed gouges along the wall and floor leading from the crate toward the next door and into the main warehouse.

“What is that?” Daisy asked, picking up on Caine’s worried expression as he looked over the destruction.

“Something was in these crates and it had the ability to either pry open or use the last of the depot’s power to reach the main warehouse,” Caine looked up from the floor and noticed the door ahead of them was opened a crack. Pointing that out, Daisy called out for Po and Caewen to come over. The pair had been watching the Uttins finally break open a crate that had been buried under its empty brothers and sisters and started going through the gear. Ozzir tagged along behind the group as they approached the north door.

“There might be a chance I can find some salvage if I go with you,” Ozzir noted as they reached the door. He stood next to Caine and Daisy as Caewen and Po grabbed and pulled the door away, exposing the dimly lit space ahead of them. Caine asked if Ozzir at least carried a glow rod. The Uttin nodded with nervous excitement, carefully securing a glow rod in one hand and his ion pistol in the other.
---

The room opened up into a larger warehouse with several crates stacked north of the heavy door. Once inside, on their left, a lone access door was closed. Very little light could be seen in this room with only a few ventilation slits providing a modicum of light. The air was warm and musty, but not stale. Enough ventilation remained that none of the group felt short of breath. Caine stood next to Po and Caewen, using his glow rod to light the floor ahead of them. His nostrils flared, he could sense something was wrong about this room from the initial clues. Po and Caewen shuffled in place, their eyes following the shaft of light that Caine had created.
—

The main threat of this room is a mining bot with a faulty computer with an active ‘anti-theft mode’ by the Mining Guild. This means it views any humanoids as potential thieves, and as per frontier directive, is allowed to take deadly action, such as as using its cutter, to protect itself from being stripped.

The party is alerted to danger and gains a normal surprise check (d6): 3 - Not surprised
—

There was a flash of red light that drew Caine’s attention. He angled his glow rod upward, illuminating the deep-gray chassis of a lone robot with an industrial cutter built into one arm. A dull red beam issued from its visor as it conducted a brief scan. Its eyes flashed, and the machine began to squeak as it maneuvered its stiffened joints.

A masculine voice boomed from the flat, squat housing that served as its head. “Warning! Potential thieves and vandals detected. As per frontier treaty, I am authorized to use deadly force to protect Mining Company property.”
—

(Q - Is Caine’s grenades button primed? A: 68% > 50% - No, there is a pin that needs to be pulled)

Round #1 Initiative
GM: 3
Party: 6

Caine curses his luck. He’d start throwing the ion grenades that would do major damage to the machine, but he was holding the glow rod and it would require him to shift his grip. He instead draws his Laser Pistol and fires. Attack: 13 - Miss

Daisy gives her best speech she can think of, “We’ve come too far to die here!” She grants a +1 to Attack & Saving Throw to her allies for 6 turns.

Caewen moves forward and attacks the robot with her sword. Attack: 16 - Hit. Damage: 1+4 = 5. Robot HP: 8/13

Po moves to position himself to flank and burn the robot.

Mining Bot attacks Caewen with its cutter. Attack: 16 - Hit. Damage: 8. Caewen HP: 11/19

Ozzir takes a step or two for an opening and fires with an ion pistol. Attack: Natural 1. Note to self: For right now, we are going to generally avoid fumbles - Natural 1 is just an automatic miss. 20’s, for now, will be considered a crit that deals x2 damage.

Round #2

Caine fires a laser pistol shot at the Miner Bot. Attack: Natural 1 - Miss

Daisy moves to get a clear line of sight and fires at Miner Bot. Attack: 12 - Miss

Po lines up his spot and unleashes a gout of flame on Miner Bot from angled direction. Attack: 15 - Hit. Damage: 7. Miner HP: 1/13. Bot Save: 6 < TN: 16 - Failure. Flames dance and continue to linger on the chassis, burning the robot.

Caewen attacks the robot with her sword. Attack: Natural 1 - Miss

Mining Bot is on fire but still lashes at Caewen for being in melee. Attack: 10 - Miss

Ozzir fires an ion shot at the Mining Bot. Attack: 6 - Miss

---

Pre-Round Note: At the start of the round, the Mining Bot gets a Save vs. Fire to avoid taking 1d6 damage. Because it has been flailing and attacking the target, it has taken no action that will give it a bonus. Save: 16 ≥ TN: 16 - Success! It seems that the metallic skin is flame retardant enough that the lingering blaze does not last long.

Round #3

Caine attacks with a laser pistol. Attack: 10 - Miss

Caewen attacks with her sword. Attack: 18 - Hit. Damage: 5 - Robot HP: 0-13 - The monosword comes in with a solid swipe that cleaves into the robot’s side and down into its core.

“Alerting Mining… Guild… warranty…” The robot utters before it falls forward. Caewen was able to jump aside with enough time to avoid the falling debris from landing on her.
—

Eventually the group heard the sound of movement behind them as Majumdan and his salvagers stepped in to find the bot steaming to the side. The room was lit up by several lanterns as Majumdan approached the group, “Is everyone alright?”

Caewen grit her teeth as she touched her side, noticing the tender skin under her combat armor. The cutter’s blow was enough that it had drawn blood from her. Po was quick to attend her, easing her to sit down with her back against a wall as he drew his Med Kit (Charges Available: 1d6+1 = 5 / Po burns a charge (4 Remaining) and heals Caewen 1d6+4 (7) Hit Points. Caewen HP: 18/19)

While Po treated Caewen, Daisy and Caine filled in Majumdan about the situation that transpired.

“Its programming had set it to wandering around with its anti-theft mode active. TThe Mining Guild may have built some of its prejudice toward Uttins into the anti-theft protocols.” Caine said.

“And I told you to stay with the group,” Majumdan turned on Ozzir, “You could have gotten hurt, and not in the service to your crew.”

“Everyone else was busy and I thought we could find some more salvage, boss,” Ozzir said and gestured, “And in a way we did, once we pull the main chassis apart. Some of its circuits will be damaged from the cut, but we should be able to get something from it.”
—

The group splits to investigate the room. Caewen is ordered to a temporary rest by her friend and healer, Po, who shook his head and held up a single claw: “Just keep your sword and shield near you if something jumps out, until then, soldier, you’re benched.” Caewen rolled her eyes, but did not contradict Po’s diagnosis. Po, along with some of the Uttins, approached the door and used the emergency release to break the seal and allowed the group to push the heavy loading door open, allowing fresh air and light to pour in. The Uttins then turned to the crates, prying them open and laying out anything worth keeping.. The following items were discovered:

  • 1d6 (4) Trade Units of general machine parts from the crates.

  • 2 replacement industrial cutter heads/blades, valuable to miners or mechanics.

  • 1 sealed power module or heavy-duty energy cell intended for mining equipment.

  • A crate of intact environmental filters, seals, and respirator components—mundane, but commercially useful.

The Rebel Base Run - Session #2

The Rebel Base Run - Session #2

GM Comments: When I initially started this game, I thought we would see a pretty standard dungeon crawl with the party trying to rob the local rebel cell that is brewing on planet Argo near the town of Sweete Bay. A few rolls on Mythic GME and a solid use of Silver Tongue by Daisy and I guess we are looking at a different situation. Of course, this is something that could have also come up in game with players. It’s also possible if I had ran a game with some friends that they also may have tried the talking route or considered joining the rebels rather than jumping into the action, so in a way I am glad I rolled up an unconventional approach to the matter, although I was eager to get some combat going. I need to tone down that inner murderhobo in me.
---

Commander Lashley appeared, flanked on one side by a body guard and Nairn, the technician. Lashley’s uniform had seen better days, suggesting that either the bunker did not have laundry service, or if there was one, nobody had either volunteered or Lashley had yet a chance to submit his clothing for cleaning. He glanced briefly at the weapons laying on the table as he drew a cigarillo from a metal case. He offered his audience a stick. There were no takers.

“So, Verringer sent you into the hills to join our ranks?” he asked sharply.
—

Q: Does Lashley believe what Narin has reported to him? A: 57 ≤ 35 - No, he does not

I think it’s pretty evident that Lashley is disbelieving the situation that is presented and I will not make the party roll a form of Sense Motive check.

—

“As you can see, it is his datapad. You can check it if you like,” Daisy held up the pad and offered it to him. Lashley looked over the pad for a moment before turning his attention to the group as a whole. Another human, an ursoid, and lastly an uttin in the group. Quite the group, and he knew if he tapped his informants in Sweete Bay he could probably get to the bottom of this, especially if either the ursoid or the uttin were locals, very few of either lived on the Middle Rim of the system.

“What did Verringer hope to accomplish by sending you out here, exactly?”

“Obviously at some point he won’t be able to make or facilitate every supply run without drawing attention from the local garrison. He’s going to need extra hands, people who are capable. For instance, myself and the uttin, are locals and we know the area.”

“A sound plan, but what made all four of you want to join this venture?” Lashley asked the group.

“Credits, mostly,” Caewen said, shifting and leaning her elbow into Po, “Me and this big guy got recruited because she promised us credits for acting as muscle.”

“I wouldn’t mind getting my hands on any spare tech you have lying around,” Caine spoke up, “I’d also like some credits, too.”

“I’m with her,” Po rumbled, noting Caewen, “So what she said is my position as well.”

“So one patriot to the rebel cause-”

“I wouldn’t call myself a patriot,” Daisy noted, “I have my own ambitions.”

“So I have four mercenaries that show up here to join up,” Lashley said, “Or, I guess, have shown up looking to help in exchange for pay. Not an ounce of patriotic spirit to break the planet free from the yoke of bad governance and monarchy.”

“I guess our motives are a little petty, but we are at least willing to work with you,” Daisy noted.

Lashley considered the situation for a moment and gestured to the pad, “I have to admit, part of me doubts Verringer actually sent you here. I’m not going to disparage what I’m certain is a pristine reputation by suggestion you’ve done something sinister to our man Leonidas,” Lashley had switched to calling Verringer by his first name, suggesting a connection that Daisy may yet regret given how she went about getting the pad, “But I could use help and I am willing to pay something upon completion of the job, and not a credit more until it is done,” Lashley said with a note finality, his eyes sweeping over the group, anticipation some request for an advance in pay that was not coming from him.
—

None of the group adamantly rejected the offer, which Lashley took that he at least had their consideration. He may not have believed Daisy’s story of Verringer giving her his datapad, but part of him admired that drive to get his attention, plus given he had now four members independent from his command, he saw it as an opportunity to utilize them on a dangerous mission with no threat to the manpower of his base.

“You are right about one thing, Miss- I don’t believe we were properly introduced,” Lashley said, he gave his name: Captain Axel Lashley.

Daisy introduced herself as Daisy Lockridge, the others give at least their first names with some varying degrees of reluctance.

“And my name is Nairn,” The technician began when Lashley cut him off with an order: “Thank-you, but get back to your console, Nairn.” The technician made a face before turning away, he stopped mid-stride and said, “Can I get anyone a drink? Synth coffee? A bottled water? It has a hint of lime to it.”

“No. No. No, thank-you. I’d love a lime water-” The last line came from Caine.

“It was a hustle getting into this base, everyone else has a better stride then me,” Caine noted before turning to accept the bottle. Nairn walked off after another sharp glance from his Captain. Lashley let the moment pass with a sigh as he continued:

“Like I was saying, you are right about one thing, supplying the base is going to be a greater endeavor than any one person put together can arrange things. We especially need to secure a clandestine area where transports can bring the material before it is then shipped here, or to a few other locations we are in the process of developing. There is an old mining facility and storage back when there was an attempt to see if there was any rare minerals that could be exploited. There are enough buildings that a cargo transport could arrive, off-load, and then slip out of without drawing attention from authorities, and right now, I need that complex investigated. Right now I’m seeing a solid group of people that could make that happen.” He nodded towards Daisy and the rest of the party.
—

Lacking bunks, the party is led to the base’s lounge. The longarms and Caewen’s shield were held in the entry hall while the group was allowed to use the cushioned couches for sleeping. None of the bunks were available, they were reserved for the rebel crew. A few heads passed by, briefly looking in before a mostly human group of men and women quickly returned to their duties.

Caewen and Po exchanged glances as they ate from their own rations. While there was no explicit ban on exploring the complex, the fact that they were shown the lounge bathroom they could use and the way that the rebels were hurrying past to keep out of the area hinted that the group was being kept on a short leash.

Daisy sat with her jaw resting against her knuckles, she felt the weight of those sideways glances and finally turned to the others, “Well? What else could we do? At least we’re not in a cell or being lined up for the firing squad.”

“But now we’re broaching on treason,” Po noted while chewing on a piece of dried fruit he had stabbed with his claw and brought up to his mouth.

“We’re not working for anyone to betray,” Daisy replied, “Caine and I are civilians, you two are ex-legion members. Plus even Lashley noted we are hired hands at the moment, not full members.”

“So, at the very least we are looking at a sedition charge,” Po said.

Daisy shook her head, “For now-” She paused and lowered her voice, she hoped because their arrival was unexpected that the rebels did not have time to utilize audio surveillance. Caine had already and pointed out one or two obvious spots where cameras were likely to be present.

“For now, our main goal is getting out of here, maybe make some money by clearing out this old depot,” Daisy said, “Does anyone have any better idea?”

Po said nothing, he sat there chewing, looking troubled, but he had nothing to retort.
—

GM Comments: No encounter or event is made over night after their meal. The party retires and remains in the lounge until the next morning when they are awoken by day shift. Lashley is not there to greet them, instead one of the rebel troopers supplies the location of an abandoned depot that Lashley is hoping is either cleared, or could be quickly secured so that supplies could be dropped off, secured, and used as buffer rather than relying on any direct routes out to the base.

Q: Does Daisy get Verringer’s datapad back? A: 46 > 35 - The rebel trooper informs Daisy that Lashley will hold onto Verringer’s pad and return it when the liaison drops around in a day or two. ---
---

Setting off from the base towards the supply depot, the party triggers a random encounter with a 2-in-6 chance (Result 4). This represents 1 out of 2 encounters as this represents a fair amount of marching into the foothills off the coast. Second encounter check at 2-in-6 (Result: 3) - No encounter. The party reaches the outer perimeter of the old mining depot from the south and west side. Their approach is concealed by broken terrain before the group starts towards a set of old crates.

—

As the party gets closer there is, in fact, another group that has arrived to try and pick over the mud colored depot, and that is a team of uttins, the same species that Caine belongs to. The uttins are at the south-west access point attempting to run a bypass on the door when the party approaches the outer crates. The party is not exactly a stealth team, but they do move at cautious speed. The group weaves through the crate stacks and we’ll check for surprise with both groups. The surprise is 2-in-6.

Party Surprise: 6 - The party is quite aware that there is something ahead.

Uttin surprise: 6 - At least one of the uttins is watching the group’s back hears something that causes his ear to twitch. The rearguard makes a sharp whistle before turning toward the crates.
—

Caine recognized the language before the others, it sounded clear as any trade common he would usually hear: “Who goes there? I saw some movement over there.”

The voice spoke in Uttinese, at least one of the members was an uttin.

The Rebel Base Run - Session #1

The Rebel Base Run - Session #1

It is an era of civil unrest.

With the death of the Sovereign, Garland XIV, rulership of the Rosefall System is in doubt. Although The Sovereign has had a son with his consort, Lady Helena, a grand master of the secretive Amethyst Order, Crown Prince Garland XV is still but an infant in minority rule and in addition to several planets rising up in rebellion to the concept of a system wide monarchy, there are some nobles within the Rosefall court who see an opportunity to take advantage of these uncertain times, either in the name of restoring good governance, or to settle private feuds amongst one another.

It was nearing dusk when the party reached the outer perimeter of what appeared to be a large beige plateau emerging from the hard soil and weeds of the upper marches outside of the town of Sweete Bay. To the east, the land slanted down to the nearby low marsh before winding back towards the vast Argadania Ocean that drew all manner of holiday makers and petty nobles to planet Argo. The system might have been in turmoil, but that did not stop this merchant prince or that system lottery winner to wade into those turquoise waters and splash in the surf. Caine was scanning the perimeter of the plateau, hoping to find the winding crack in the uneven rock face.

Caewen stared with a raised brow as she watched Caine work. She had to ask: “Are those theater glasses you’re using, mate?”

Caine spoke as he scanned, “They were. I made a few adjustments. Shame to let a good pair of theater glasses go to waste because a scav had no interest in Qinlon Opera.”

“Yeah? What’s the chance that they explode?” Caewen asked with an amused expression. She was quite aware of the Uttin reputation for their tinkering and what it usually resulted in.

Caine rolled his eyes while he continued to scan the plateau, “Not everything we touch requires volatile circuit boards, sometimes we do build things that work.” He lifted the glass away from his eyes and offered it to Caewen, “You want to try it?”

“Why not, it’s just my eyes at stake,” She took up the brass lorgnette and was impressed when her thumb rested on a small focus wheel set into the side of the lorgnette that allowed the optics to zero on the plateau’s ridgeline. Caine directed from the side towards the east of the ridge right as it began to curve which showed the crack in the rock face, “That should be it. That’s the only ravine a man could fit through.”

“How’d you get this information again?” Caewen asked while she continued to scan the horizon, “I think it was a little unclear what exactly went on.” She lifted the viewfinder from her eyes and handed them back to Caine for him to fold up.

Daisy scratched her neck, her cheeks were pink as Caewen looked over to her and she admitted, “I usually try to be good, and it’s not like I pick the man’s pocket. Verringer is a regular Bartle’s place and is more-or-less harmless, kind of a saloon bum, but harmless. He happened to have a datapad lying on the table while he was passed out and it was unlocked. At first it was just curiosity, but then I actually read what he was involved in.”

“Must speak to the quality of the rebels if they are going to a barfly to facilitate their supplies then,” Caewen finished up. What was on the pad was known between the party members already. It was the location and presumably the access code for their liaison in Sweete Bay that was purchasing supplies and arranging the supplies to get out into the badlands for the rebels to get their hands on.

“He does bring advantage, he’s a local, and the last person anyone would suspect to be working with the rebels because of his reputation as the local drunk,” Caine said, “The only problem for the rebels that while Verringer is sharp… he is also an actual drunk, that isn’t an act. Now the only issue is we are not sure if there are perimeter cameras or sentries.”

“I can’t see anything on the horizon to suggest there are any sentries,” Caewen said.

---

For this run I’ve decided to try out the tried-and-true Mythic GM emulator to serve as my oracle. I might change my mind, for now, I decide to ask if we get an interesting event at Chaos Level 5 - Somewhat Likely - Result: 47 / 65 - Yes

---

The party’s conversation died down at a distant vibration that grew in a steady vibration. Despite the use of anti-gravity repulsors, the amount of weight the great pads were holding up in defiance to gravity had created the vibrations that drew Caine’s attention. The party spotted a personal transport drove down into the valley and approached the side of the plateau. The initial vibration was joined by a deeper tremor as the supposed residual boulders that were stacked against the plateau split and shifted, revealing the false front as a massive vehicle bay was briefly visible before the natural earth shifted and swallowed the vehicle again. The others could see enough to know they were close to something big.

“Well, well, looks like Verringer wasn’t just a saloon bum after all,” Daisy noted.
---

The party decides to chance it after watching the vehicle bay button up, counting on that attention being drawn towards the vehicle and not towards the narrow crack to one side. The group includes Caewen at the front with shield and monosword in hand. She is followed by Daisy, toting her laser pistol in one hand with her datapad. Po backed the group with his flamer drawn, the muzzle pointed down. Last was Caine with his rifle huffing across the grounds towards the crack. The party reaches the crack and passes through with Caewen in the lead. Just beyond the outer entrance, in the dim glow of a fluorescent strip that was set into the wall above the group, the group could make out a metallic door leading into the rebel base.

---

Are there any cameras? Chaos 5 - 50/50 - 45 < 50 - Yes

There are cameras and decide to see if anyone is paying attention to the monitors. I’ll put it at a 2-in-6 chance that the two technicians that are minding their stations are paying enough attention to potentially spot the party coming up. Result: 1 - The party is spotted moving through the ravine. This does raise suspicion, especially a party that is approaching with drawn weapons.

---

Daisy steps forward and brings Verringer’s datapad up to the console built into the wall. The transmitter on the corner of the pad flashed a green light that matched its counterpart mounted to the right of the door. Two green lights, the door split open. As Caewen made her way up the steps, she found herself confronted with the business end of a laser pistol.
---

"Well, well, a band of locals just come walking in where they are not invited,” the first technician was standing while a second technician watched from his console. The second man’s hands were an inch from a panic button that would have activated klaxons throughout the base. For a moment, nobody moved until Daisy spoke up from behind Caewen.

“Wait, hold on, I’m a representative of Leonidas Verringer,” Daisy held up the datapad, “He asked me to bring these warm bodies out of Sweete Bay and bring them over to meet your recruiter. We have some top talent here, especially myself and my uttin friend here. We’re locals like Verringer and wouldn’t arouse suspicion.”

“Why didn’t he come himself?” The technician asked.

“He’s busy coordinating supplies, that’s why it’s vital that we join up and serve as part of the pipeline. You don’t think people won’t start asking questions about why he is sending out this parcel or that parcel to the drop off point?”

---

This might be vaguely implausible, or shaky, but it still has a chance to succeed. I decide this counts as Silver Tongue and give the Technician a Save vs. Charm attempt. Result is: 9 < 18 - Failure.

---

“Alright, I’ll go get the recruiter if all of you would like to lay your weapons on the table and relax, I’m sure we can get you situated for an overnight stay since you came all this way here,” The first technician said as he turned away and started towards his console. Both men visibly relaxed as the second technician followed the lead of his partner.

---

The first technician walks over to the station and starts speaking into his intercom. At the same time, Caewen does not disarm, she does sheath her sword, which catches the eye of the second technician who watches her, his gaze flicking from her waist to the table.

Caewen keeps it simple: “It isn’t leaving my side, friend. I promise it won’t pop out and bite you.” She does set her shield on the ground to keep her hands free. As for the other two, Caine and Po, they do set their long arms such as the flamer and rifle, but like Caewen, opt to keep their las pistols at their sides. And while Daisy did set down her laser pistol next to the flamer and the rifle, she still had her hold-out laser still holstered at her thigh, she wanted to be diplomatic - to a point.

The Rebel Base Run - Session #0

The Rebel Base Run - Session #0

System Used: White Star (Swords & Wizardry - White Box)

As in my experience with many solo bloggers, in addition to my In Search of Adventure game ran under BFRPG, I have a second game that I’m toying with in the genre of soft science fiction and science fantasy. In this case I decided to break out my copy of James M. Spahn’s ‘White Star’ to run a session. Let’s look at the characters involved:

Notes: Daisy is an ‘Aristocrat’ - in this case ruling her domain, which is the local tavern near Sweete Bay on her home planet Argo. She dreams of being an actual aristocrat, or amassing more legitimate power than just serving drinks for tips. She is friendly with Caine Miro, a local Uttin junker whom she clued in on a possible score she picked up while waiting tables.
