As we come to an end of Blackmoor Week in celebration of the work of David Arneson, let's look at a couple of adventuring companies running around my rendition of The North.
The Illegal LobsterAdventuring/Smuggling Company
Base of Operation: The City of Jackport & City of Maus
Originally founded by a company of privateers who would use stretches of cooling off periods, taking time off from raiding rival ship companies out of Blackmoor or Port Dacoit, or braving the northern waters and striking at Sakndaharian drakkars to instead focus on fishing and especially crabbing, where illicit goods could be hidden before being dredged up and brought into safe harbors located in cities such as Maus and Jackport, the Illegal Lobster has grown to an aquatic based adventuring company. Known for dawning magical items such as Cloaks of the Manta Ray and swimming below armed with tridents and spears, the Illegal Lobster likes to target sunken ruins or burgle underwater castles belonging to storm giants for great pearls and magic items. The guild's leadership splits time between secret grottos near Jackport that have been hallowed out and turned into discreet harbors and out on the open water, commanding operations from the captain's quarters on-board the Jupiter. The Lobster's main contribution to the North is the number of blood enemies they have picked up among powerful Skandaharian jarls and humanoid pirates in service to the Egg. Otherwise, the Silver Lobster on a black banner is often viewed as a menace.
Adventuring Company
Base of Operations: The City of Blackmoor
Captained by the Peshwah champion, Bhaldur the Rider, the Wild Cards is an adventuring company out of the City of Blackmoor who has performed services from escorting and running messages to the Regents of the Mines. Protecting envoys who have met with the Dragonborn of Rodhin. To leading efforts in exploring the ruins left by 'the gods' with their marvelous magical items that have been brought back after raided spoils were divided between the Cards and the Peshwah that often patrol those distant regions within the Hak. Ranking members within the organization are giving card ranks. Bhaldur, viewing himself a humble rider and warrior, has taken the rank as King of Diamonds.
Adventuring Company
Base of Operations: Lake Gloomy
Founded by former Wild Card member, Ichabod Westlake, the Longshots operate out of the township of Lake Gloomy and spend most of their time exploring and salvaging what can be found from the many outposts and ruins associated with the nefarious Temple of the Frog. The black armies of the temple as still too numerous for a direct fight, but the Longshots have managed to recover several wondrous items that are only partially translated by notable artificers such as Leuk-O the Thonian and Lum the Clearheaded. The Long Shots have also been monitoring the fracturing of the Afridhi following the 'Silence of Zugzul' several months earlier.
Adventuring Company
Base of Operations: Starmorgan
Inspired by the Ten Heroes who founded the Duchy of Ten. Ten Men, often represented by their symbol - a red 10 against a black background, is an adventuring company that view themselves patriots of the Duchy and protectors of the unwanted who had held against the Afridhi and have always viewed the eastern Thonians coldly. Although founded in Starmorgan and have, like several units, gained ground against the fracturing Afridhi since Zugzul's supposed 'silence' which has constrained Zugzul's cleric brides. Actually reclaiming their old guild hall in Starmorgan is still a distant task. The company instead bases itself out of Hanford and has looked at possibly clearing out Castle Braunstein to form a second base until the day they can finally free their beloved Starmorgan from occupation.
