Castle Braunstein
Sitting a little ways north of Hanford along the Misauga River are the old ruins of Castle Braunstein. Built by Sir Aldric Braun, initially to guard against threats leaking out of the Great Dismal Swamp (the Dis) and Lake Gloomen (the Gloomy), the castle became a ruin due to its association with the town of Hanford and the Duchy of Ten in their struggles against the Thonian Empire, which had settled in the east. Both Hanford and Castle Braunstein became famous for helping nurture and launch insurgencies against the Thonians. Over time, however, while prominent Tennian adventurers and citizens were willing to rebuild Hanford after enduring multiple punitive expeditions by the Thonian legions, that same spirit of renewal was never fostered at Castle Braunstein. Some say it was because the members of House Braun went mad, playing games of masquerade and music while men tried desperately to hold the castle. Others, especially the supporters of Erich Braun, dispute that his kin were madmen, arguing instead that Castle Braunstein was ignored because the Notables of Hanford feared the Brauns would assert their dominance over the region, including asserting domain authority over the City of Hanford. Thus, the Lord Mayor and notables convinced potential residents to avoid the castle and let it languish as a ruin. As is often the case when a castle becomes a ruin, it tends to attract unseemly things to haunt its halls.
