#9 

The party spots Lucille hovering in place. Alias calls out to her first, “Did you get the wolf?”

Lucille turns around to the party and says, “Yes, I let it go.”

Alias makes a Perception check to spot something hovering around Lucille’s shoulder. Perception: 4 - She does not immediately spot the figure behind Lucille

Fenthick is allowed a Perception roll due to his elven nature and sharp senses. His Passive Perception meets the DC: 13 - His eyes immediately widen and he grips his mace. “Show yourself, fiend!” ---


The Thulid emerges from the doorway. Its skin is a pale lavender with two silver eyes looking peer from either side of its oblong head. A set of tentacles gently twitched and shifted sporadically as it swept its gaze over the party. Lucille stood in front of the Thulid, her head high, but her eyes glazed due to the charm that had been placed on her.


The Thulid spoke in the party’s minds, “Uninvited guests. While I should thank-you for ridding my unwanted tenants, I at least could trust them not to run to the nearby city and alert them to my presence.”


“We can talk this out,” Alias suggested, “If you release our friend and leave this area, you can return to whatever depths you first emerge from and we will be about our way.”


“I spent too long taking control of this castle to simply walk away,” the Thulid placed its hand on Lucille’s shoulder and said, “The rogue has murder in her eyes for me.”


Lucille suddenly became upset and said, “Alias? What the hell is the matter with you?”

New Initiative - Round #1

The Thulid targets Cutherbet with a Mind Spike. Attack: 9 - Miss. As a free action, it tells Lucille to stall them as it backs away and starts back towards its lab to activate the guardian construct.


Fenthick moves to Lucille and casts a Protection from Good & Evil on Lucille. While she is commanded to block, she would not try to harm her allies necessarily and accepts the spell as a reasonable request. (-1 Scroll: Protection from Good & Evil), granting Lucille a new Saving Throw vs. Charm. Save: Natural 20 - Resistance! The charm is broken over Lucille.


Cuthbert moves to try and chase down the Thulid. He moves up to full speed, rounding the corner into the lab to find that the Thulid is trying to approach a deactivated construct.


Nindur moves behind Cuthbert and spots the Thulid. He casts Web (-1 2nd level Slot. ⅓ Remaining). Thulid Save (Advantage vs. Spells) 6 or 7 vs. 13 - Failure. It is restrained and must make a Disadvantage Arcana check (DC: 12) to activate the untested Guardian Construct.


Alias moves up to check on Lucille to make sure she is okay.


Lucille spends the round clearing her head. “I’m alright, I’m alright.” She assures Alias and Fenthick.


Round #2 

Thulid takes the following actions:

Mind Spike Recharge (5-in-6 Chance: 2)


Thulid Str Check to Break from Webs: 5 or 16 (16) vs. 13 - Success. The Magic Resistance kicks and the webs fall away.


Thulid attempts to boot the Shield Construct. Arcana (+5): Natural 1 - The Construct does not immediately respond to commands. This will count as the Thulid’s move action.


The Thulid burns a 1st level Slot (⅓ Remaining) and casts Dissonant Whispers on Cuthbert. 12 vs. 13 - Failure. Damage: 13. Cuthbert HP: 27/40. Cuthbert is frightened by the noise that the Thulid produces in his mind.


Cuthbert uses his reaction to retreat from the room and around the corner. He needs to catch his breath.


Alias moves around the corner and gets into the lab. She makes a Cunning Action (Hide) to try and get a Sneak Attack. Hide: 8 vs. 14 - Failure. She can only make a normal attack. She fires her hand crossbow. Attack: 23 - Hit. Damage: 4. Thulid HP: 64/68


Nindur burns his last 2nd level Spell Slot (0/3 Remaining) to summon a Flaming Sphere that hovers by his shoulder. He attacks Thulid with the sphere. Thulid Save: 14 vs. 13 - Save, Half-Damage. 5/2 = 2. Thulid HP: 62/68


Alias moves and gets into the lab. She marks Thulid as a Favored Enemy (0/2 Remaining). She attacks with her Short Bow. Attack: 24 - Hit. Damage: 4 + 4 (Force) = 8. Thulid HP: 54/68


Fenthick moves to provide guardianship for the ranged attacks. He casts Heroism on himself, gaining immunity to Frighten and (3) Temporary HP


Round #3 

Thulid Mind Lance (not Spike) Recharge (5-in-6): 6 - Recharged!

Casts Mind Spike on Fenthick. Fenthick Save: 20 - Success. Takes only ½ damage from 3d8 (Psychic): 8/2 = 4. Fenthick HP: 23/27.


Uses ‘Extract Thoughts’ on Cuthbert, the Thulid senses his fear. Cuthbert Save: 17 - Success. ½ damage (3d6): 10/2 = 5. Cuthbert HP: 22/40


Activates Shield Guardian attempt (Arcana): 23 - Success. The Guardian begins to power up. Next round it will enter combat.


Alias aims at Thulid. Attack: Natural 20 - Crit. Damage: 13 + 11 = 24. Thulid HP: 30/68


Nindur uses Flame Sphere as Free Action. Thulid Save: 18 - Success for ½ damage. Damage: 7/2 = 3. Thulid HP: 27/68


Nindur casts Ray of Frost. Attack: 24 - Hit. Damage: 8. Thulid HP: 19/68


Lucille fires her shortbow at Thulid. Attack: 16 - Hit. Damage: 5 + 1 = 6. Thulid HP: 13/68


Fenthick summons a Spiritual Weapon (Holy Hammer) and uses it to attack the Thulid. Attack: 14 - Miss.


Cuthbert moves back into the room and gets as far as standing beside Fenthick.


Round #4 

Thulid uses Mind Lance on Fenthick. Attack: 15 - Miss


The Shield Construct moves and engages Fenthick. Attack: 25 - Hit. Damage: 15

Fenthick’s Temporary HP Absorbs 3. Remaining Damage: 12

Fenthick HP: 11/27 - Concentration: 9 < 10 - Failure. Heroism ends.


Bonus Action - Shield Construct uses Shield Pulse, giving Thulid Light Cover (+2 AC / +2 Dex) for 1 round.


With the fight going on the middle of the lab, Alias creeps along the counters and pops around the corner to try and ambush Thulid. Stealth vs. Perception: 24 - Success. Sneak Attack: 22 - Hit. Damage: 15. Thulid HP: 0/68 - Slain


The Guardian needs to be deactivated via the arcane focus on the Thulid’s wrist. Until that is used, the party is stuck fighting it out with the construct.


Nindur gets an automatic Insight/recall check of the Thulid using an arcane device to control the Construct. He moves around the counters to try and reach the body. He makes a Stealth roll to try and not appear too conspicuous by the construct. Stealth: 11 vs. Passive Perception: 12 - The construct does sense Nindur. If Nindur gets too close, there is a chance he gets pummeled.


Cuthbert uses Turn the Tide as a Bonus Action (1d6+1 = 6). Fenthick is healed 6 (17/27). Cuthbert is healed 6. Cuthbert HP: 28/40. Channel Divinity (0/1 Remaining)


Cuthbert attacks Shield Construct. Attack: 25 - Hit. Damage: 9 (Magical Bludgeoning) + 16 (Radiant). Damage: 25. Guardian Construct HP: 27/52. 1st Level Slots Remaining: ⅓


Lucille fires a magical arrow at Shield Construct. Attack: Natural 20 - Crit! Damage: 6 + 1 (Force) = 7 + (9 + 3 = 12). Final Damage: 7 + 12 = 19. Shield Construction HP: 27-19 = 8/52


Fenthick uses Spiritual Weapon to attack Shield Construct as a Bonus Action. Attack: 14 - Miss. He casts Word of Radiance, forcing a Saving Throw. Save: 9 - Failure. Damage: 5 (Radiant). HP: 3/52


Round #5

Shield Construct attacks Cuthbert. Attack: 21 - Miss


Alias performs an acrobatics skill test to leap onto a counter to get a clear shot. Acrobatics: 23 - Success. She is up and can make a Cunning Action (Hide): 17 - Success. Sneak Attack: 22 - Hit. Damage: 15. Shield Construct HP: 0/52 - Slain
